orlie wondered about the stars that she saw from her window on dark clear nights. And she wondered what she would do when she was old enough to leave home.

It was the custom for rabbits to spend five summers with their families before they were grown enough to make their own way. Jorlie was four-summers-old. She didn't have much time before she would be expected to do grownup things.

orlie loved her mother and would miss her, but that was not her biggest worry. She was afraid that she would not be ready when the time came.
How would she know what to do without her mother's help?

orlie went to school, as all young rabbits did there. She was a good student and wanted to learn all she could. Jorlie raised her hand often in class. Sometimes she gave the wrong answers. Jorlie worried about that too.
