I arranged for the garden in the front and back to be edged with seamless concrete border. I planted a few more perennials in the front bed -- hardy hibiscus, coreopsis, lavender cotton, salvia, and fountain grass. I love the view in the back. I get up every morning to watch the sunrise. It was hot when we moved in, but soon after that the rains came and they didn't stop for quite a while. We got much more rain than is usual for summer in Oklahoma. The ravine to the east was a river a few times, and the gardens and lawn stayed soggy. I discovered that there is hard clay about a foot underground that keeps the soil from draining well. I found no worms when planting the garden, either. Even though I paid the builder for a layer of topsoil, this soil will be a big challenge. I'll be starting a compost pile come spring.
