Ophelia

by Alice Woodrome

Loyal and lovely Ophelia,
So young and so naive,
Falls in love with Hamlet,
But he can only grieve.

You see, his dad, the King
Has died, and mother dear
Has jumped into a marriage
To further her career --

Much too quickly, Hamlet thinks,
To the odious Claudius,
His uncle, who is now the King,
Whom he knows he cannot trust.

Sweet Ophelia wants her Hamlet,
And yes, Prince Hamlet wants her,
But Claudius and Papa Polonius
Have the final word.

They command our dear Ophelia
To break poor Hamlets heart,
By returning his letters and tokens.
Hamlet takes it kind of hard.

His mother, faithless -- and now his love.
And to make the matter worse,
He learns his dad was murdered.
And now he is a ghost.

His uncle has killed his father,
And his father now wants vengeance.
His ghost demands that Hamlet
Kill the King when he gets the chance.

Hamlet explodes, and goes mental-
For his lost love, it is believed.
Sweet Ophelia goes to Hamlet,
Prince Hamlet tells her to leave.

He calls his Ophelia unfaithful
And breaks her heart again,
Then stages a little theatre
To accuse the killer king.

King Claudius is most unsettled,
Goes to the chapel - how strange.
Hamlet takes aim, then hesitates,
And misses his chance at revenge

Then Hamlet visits his mother
While Ophelia's father hides.
Hamlet mistakes him for Claudius
And runs him through - he dies.

Poor grief-stricken Ophelia
Her lover has killed her dad.
No wonder the girl goes crazy
And drowns herself - how sad.

The rest of the story is Hamlet's
With dueling, poison and lies
I won't detail the ending
Just a hint; most everyone dies.
